P - Persona
Una persona è quello che contiene
dopo che la vita
ha lavorato il legno della vita
fino alla midolla, fino a farne una barca leggerissima
che tiene il mare
sotto qualunque cielo. Io ricordo soltanto
il luccicare a perdita d’occhio
della mia vita. Se guardi bene, vedi una cosa viva.

A person is what they contain
after life
has worked the wood of life
down to the very marrow, making the lightest of boats of it
that holds the sea
under any sky. I only remember
the sparkling in the far-off distance
of my life. If you look carefully, you see something alive.

Une personne est ce qu'elle contient
après que la vie
a travaillé le bois de la vie
jusqu'à la moelle, jusqu'à en faire un léger esquif
qui tient la mer
sous quelque ciel que ce soit. Mon seul souvenir
c'est le scintillement à perte de vue
de ma vie. En plissant les yeux, tu vois quelque chose, de vivant.

M - Mens
Een mens is de inhoud die blijft
nadat het levenshout
zozeer door het leven is bewerkt
dat er een bootje ontstaat dat zo licht is
dat het onder alle hemels door de zee wordt gedragen.
Ik herinner mij alleen de schittering, zover het oog rijkt,
van mijn leven. Als je goed kijkt,
zie je iets wat leeft.
