James Byrd Jr (after Guitar Drag, Christian Marclay, 2000) [full version]

Breaking Silence (Bloodaxe Books, 2011)

A man ties a Fender to

the back of a pick-up truck,

ramps the volume, revs the gas

           and drives. You watch

from the safety of a gallery,

           an exhibition themed for jazz.

Elsewhere, a headline cries

           a man was lynched yesterday,

Billie Holiday is cured for good now

on the cover of Ebony, 1949.

The guitar drags like an anchor,

rope around its neck, and keeps on

singing, side to side, its strings alive

in chorus. Turns road to music,

chords of glass and leaves, polyphony

            of dirt and tarmac.

The camera doesn’t flinch.

The road becomes a song, spooled out.

The text says it screeches like Hendrix

            before it breathes its last.

Breaking Silence (Bloodaxe Books, 2011)

Un homme lie une Fender

            à l’arrière d’un pick-up,

monte le volume, met les gaz

            et roule. Tu regardes

Breaking Silence (Bloodaxe Books, 2011)

Een man bindt een Fender

            vast aan de kofferbak,

volume hoog, in volle vaart

            scheert hij weg. Je kijkt

vanuit een galerij,

            waar jazz de werken kleurt.

Ergens anders, schreeuwt een krantenkop

dat een man gisteren gelyncht werd,

Billie Holiday is nu voorgoed genezen

op de cover van Ebony, 1949.

De gitaar sleept als een anker,

touw rond zijn nek, blijft hij

zingen, heen en weer, de snaren levend

in koor.
