Karl SEGLEM

 

Norwegian tenor saxophonist, goat horn player, composer, producer and poet. Called one of Norway´s foremost musicians with a unique sound, he has also developed a distinctive identity as a musician, composer and published poet. His use of goat horns and other traditional instruments - notably the Hardanger fiddle - is excitingly blended with a plethora of modern and eclectic elements: electronic loops, jazz improvisation, world music traits, rock characteristics – and poetry.
He had his debut as a published poet with the collection Stilla er ein åker (2006), followed by Kvit frekvens, stille spor (2013). Karl Seglem entices the meeting between words and sound in a lyrical landscape, interchangeably inspired by nature, mechanics, technology and urbanism. His language gives his poetry a distinctive trait, as he writes in “Nynorsk”, the other official written standard in Norway, next to “Bokmaal”. Nynorsk is made up by different Norwegian dialects, as opposed to its counterpart, which derives from Danish. An estimated 10-15% of Norwegians write in Nynorsk.
Karl Seglem has had an extensive artistic cooperation with one of Europe’s most-performed dramatists, the Norwegian playwright and novelist Jon Fosse. Together they have recorded two albums, uniting jazz, folk and poetry in a single artistic expression: Prose (1996) and Poem (2006). Moreover, Seglem has been collaborating with many of the foremost Norwegian and foreign musicians, writers, painters, filmmakers, dancers & choreographers.
In 2010, Karl Seglem received the Buddy Award, the highest Norwegian jazz award.

Karl Seglem est un saxophoniste, flûtiste de corne de chèvre, compositeur, producteur et poète. Il a publié son premier recueil de poèmes en 2006, Stilla er ein åker, suivi de Kvit frekvens, stille spor en 2013. Au niveau de jazz poésie, Il a collaboré extensivement avec le grand dramatiste et écrivain norvégien, Jon Fosse, pendant plusieurs années. Ensemble, ils ont sorti deux albums, et ils ont fait de nombreux concerts.
Musicien de jazz encensé par la critique et le public, Seglem a été récompensé du premier prix de jazz norvégien en 2010. Dans son jazz poésie, Karl Seglem mène les mots et la musique à une fusion dans un paysage lyrique, inspiré de la nature ainsi que la technologie et l’urbanisme. Il a créé son propre univers de son en mélangeant les instruments traditionnels - notamment le violon Hardanger et la corne de chèvre – avec de la musique électronique, du jazz, de la musique du monde, du rock – et de la poésie.

Karl Seglem bespeelt de geitenhoorn, een traditioneel Noors instrument, hij is saxofonist, componist, producer en dichter. Zijn eerste dichtbundel, Stilla er ein åker, publiceerde hij in 2006, daarna volgde Kvit frekvens, stille spor in 2013. Voor zijn jazzpoëzie-optredens werkte hij een aantal jaren nauw samen met de grote theaterauteur en romanschrijver Jon Fosse. Ze hebben samen twee albums uitgebracht en heel wat concerten gegeven. Als jazzmuzikant kreeg hij veel lof van de kritiek en van het publiek, en in 2010 werd hij bekroond met de belangrijkste Noorse jazzprijs. In zijn jazzpoëzie brengt Karl Seglem woorden en muziek bij elkaar in een poëtisch landschap dat zowel door de natuur als door de technologie en de stad is geïnspireerd. Hij creëert zijn eigen klankwereld door traditionele instrumenten – met name de Hardangerviool en de geitenhoorn – te mengen met elektronische muziek, jazz, wereldmuziek en rock – en met gedichten.
